Vadose zone characterization for groundwater vulnerability assessment
Abstract
It is fundamental for European countries to meet the objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive and assess the chemical status of groundwater bodies and whether they are at risk or not. A crucial part of achieving these objectives is the assessment of groundwater vulnerability. Here, the pathway between a source (i.e. contamination) and the receptor (i.e groundwater) needs to be further investigated. Most important for the pathway, is the time associated with transport which can be assessed with using environmental tracers. Therefore, the aim of this joint project will be combining the Austrian and Slovenian expertise to study the transit times of water in different soils and for different land use in the Krško Brežiško polje case study area. At this site, nitrate concentrations partly exceed the allowed limit of 50 mg/l. Currently, this site is used for monitoring soil water content and nitrate concentrations in groundwater. Within the project, we will analyze the soil physical properties at this site and take soil cores samples for the analysis of oxygen and hydrogen isotope in the pore water. Combined with mathematical modelling, this will allow the estimation of transit times of and how it varies in different soils and for different land use. Consequently, the time lags associated with transport will be determined which is crucial for describing the vulnerability of the groundwater.
