Sustainability conflicts, Transformation and Uneven DEveLopment (STRUDEL)
Abstract
The ongoing global industrialization and economic modernization have intensified the demand for natural resources, leading to environmental challenges worldwide. Sustainability conflicts arise as societies seek models of economic development that prioritize environmental preservation and social equity. The STRUDEL project focuses on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Western Balkans, exploring the unique sustainability conflicts in this region. The project employs an interdisciplinary approach drawing on sustainability science, forestry research, political science, economics, and sociology. Four dimensions of sustainability conflicts are examined: legislative action, civil society and social movements, citizen attitudes, and local conflicts. These dimensions encompass analyses of political discourse, civil society engagement, public opinions, and localized sustainability conflicts. Specific objectives include conducting research along the four dimensions, enhancing methodological skills, fostering collaborative research, and building networks. The project utilizes AI-based quantitative textual analysis, organizational surveys, qualitative interviews, visual analysis, and population surveys to comprehensively investigate sustainability conflicts. Case studies, including conflicts over battery factories, energy, water management, and urban forestry, contribute showcasing regional specificities. The project aims to impact the understanding of sustainability, transformation, and development in the wider region. It establishes a network connecting researchers and builds capacities for scientific excellence and innovation. Findings will inform policy development for sustainable and equitable development, with the network's sustainability extending beyond the project period. Implementation involves an 18-month research phase and a subsequent dissemination phase (6 months), culminating in national and international presentations and expert roundtable discussions.
