Risk perception, attitudes, and management in Austrian agriculture
Abstract
Risks such as production- and labor deficiencies as well as extreme weather events and price volatilities are inherent in agriculture. Thus, an early recognition, evaluation and management of risks should be an integral part of the business strategy. The design of risk management strategies crucially depends on the individual risk perception, attitudes and assessment skills. We aim to conduct for the first time in Austria, a written, quantitative survey among 2.000 farmers to evaluate the relevance of specific risks as well as the state and intention of agricultural risk management in Austria. The results of the survey will be complemented with qualitative expert interviews among stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The project results aim to support risk communication and risk management, and provide recommendations for an improved risk management for farmers, consultants, politicians and administration.
