Sustainable municipal waste management in Zanzibar – Module 1
Abstract
The present situation of waste management in Zanzibar can be characterised by lacking disposal capacities and an undeveloped recycling sector. A further shortcoming is littering of waste with negative consequences on tourism. Waste disposal practices as lacking landfill capacities and the application of untreated residual waste as fertilizer in agriculture pose the risk of soil contamination and should be replaced by organized collection, treatment and recycling of waste. With this, littering should be reduced as well. The overall objective of the project is to improve the current municipal solid waste management system in Zanzibar. To achieve this, a sustainable MSW management plan will be developed and solutions for environmentally sound recycling and disposal will be identified.
