Fish-repeller Alte Donau
Abstract
Since 2003, the MA 45 is conducting a detailed program of measures to manage the growth and distribution of macrophytes in the Alte Donau in Vienna. Extended growth of charales algae is a declared goal to reach an equilibrial state of different types of submerged plants. These laterally growth-restricted plants have disadvantages compared to the fast and high growing Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) and are additionally under stress by small plant-eating fish like the rudd. To reduce the plant biomass in the upper layers of the urban lake Alte Donau, mower-boats are deployed. The capture of fish by the mowing activity, especially individuals of the pike, is a potential threat to fish population in the Alte Donau. These perceptions demand the development of an effective fish-repelling installation that can be equipped to the mowing-boats.
