Assessmment and identification of type-specific river stretches in Austria (study 2).
Abstract
This study (volume 1 with 25 federal rivers and volume 2 with 29 Austrian rivers) systematically investigates, describes and maps all Austrian rivers with a catchment area >500 km¿ specifically identifying which stretches remain in a relatively natural state. To map and evaluate these waters, rivertype-specific morphological and hydrological guidelines, developed within a separate preliminary study, are used (BMUJF 1993). The results of the study provide the baseline data for water-related planning. They are a spatially relevant tool which can, among other applications, define guidelines for the use, development and protection of riverine areas.
