Training foresters to establish a sustainable monitoring scheme of wildlife in Myanmar
Abstract
Myanmar is opening up with tremendous potential in biodiversity research and conservation needs. However, after six decades of mismanagement, capacity in the academic and conservation sector is absent. Local organizations and the government have identified a lack of capacity in baseline research within biodiversity, global change and forestry. The capacity gap in foresters and conservationists is the major obstacle to sustainable use the natural resources and assess the use of natural resources. To mitigate these shortcomings we suggest a training program for Myanmar foresters and conservationists to build capacity for implementing long-term monitoring and to assess success of conservation strategies.
