Sustainable growth and employment in rural areas through innovation
Abstract
Innovations create conditions for economic growth, efficient use of resources and improved quality of life. This insight carries the current program of rural development more than in the previous programs by putting effort on measures to support the innovation system. The "European Innovation Partnership Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability" is an example of this development. The scientific analysis of innovations at the farm requires the collection of empirical material on the farm. Above all, it is important to elicit the attitude of individual farm managers toward innovation. Based on these findings overarching commonalities can then be studied, as well as the agricultural potential for innovation can be outlined. Such an overview is essential for developing policies that help utilize the existing potential for innovation in agriculture. Only when it is known which measures, types of innovation, and innovation objectives and opportunities for innovation at the level of the farm are in place, it is possible to improve the framework and to strengthen the innovation system.
