SamoMAB - Samothraki as a Biosphere Reserve: Securing continuity of science-civil society collaboration in a systemic design
Abstract
This project builds upon many years of research, seed funded by the MAB committee ofthe Austrian Academy of Sciences, directed at guiding the Greek island of Samothraki towards becoming a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO standards. The local municipality and a number of local civil initiatives support this plan. The current project will support finding solutions for some critical issues: local waste and water management, protection against overgrazing and support forforest and biodiversity conservation in the existing Natura 2000 core zone. The project is designed in a transdisciplinary fashion, employing citizen science elements to create understanding and support on the part of the local population. Methods employed in collaboration with Greek, Portuguese and Austrian partners range from forest inventories, seeding experiments, using anapp to optimize farmers’ strategies to focus groups with teachers and school children in preparation of composting experiments. A film team accompanies the scientific process for documentation.
