Abstract
ZEAFOLU will analyse, embedded in a stakeholder process, the viable option space for a world without net AFOLU emissions in order to reach the ambitious 2°C (or 1.5°C) target. It will study changes in land-use patterns and intensity, agricultural technology, human diets or the demand for biomass products, employing a consistent and comprehensive biophysical biomass-balance model, in combination with a systematic assessment of impacts on biodiversity, well-being and the economy. In order to systematically scrutinize the dependency of the option space on biomass trade, which results in a spatial decoupling between production and consumption and renders analyses intricate, cumbersome and difficult to interpret, we choose a nested analytical design in which we apply the zero-AFOLU emission constraint at four different spatial scales: (a) The rural Eisenwurzen region, (b) The national level of Austria, (c) The European level, examining the EU 28 at the national level and (d) the global level, differentiating 11 World regions. The latter two scales allow gaining insights into the role of international trade for meeting the zero-AFOLU constraint in both the Eisenwurzen and Austria.
