Measuring of sediment transport and morphodynamics at the Vjosa river / Albania
Abstract
The aim of the measurements of direct bed load and indirect as well as direct suspended sediment load measurements is to perform for the first time a quantitative balancing of the sediment transport, in order to subsequently calculate the sediment loads of the Vjosa over longer periods of time (several years). These are important information and foundations for further ecological as well as economic considerations on the Vjosa, including the expected negative impacts of a power plant construction (e.g., downstream river bed incision, coastal erosion, etc.). The measurements will be carried out in close cooperation with the Polytechnic University of Tirana. Collaboration takes place in the measurements themselves, but especially in the evaluation of the samples (creation of grain distribution curves) and maintenance / reading of the continuous measuring instruments at the Pocem.
