Optimisation of the breeding programs for the Austrian Simmental and Brown Swiss cattle populations.
Abstract
The breeding programs run by the Association of Austrian Simmental Breeders and the Association of Austrian Brown Swiss Breeders are described and optimised. An essential question deals with increasing the efficiency of breeding programs based on various levels of co-operation between the several breeding organisations (including one central breeding program). Additionally strategies concerning artificial insemination, the use of sires from foreign populations and the possibilities of progeny testing for traits of meat quality are being analysed. The project involves the evaluation of the present situation based on interviews and data analysis as well as calculations of breeding programs with the computer program ZPLAN. The program allows a detailed modeling and optimisation of breeding measures.
