Abstract
The BioSet project aims to develop the scientific basis for the development of binders based on renewable raw materials such as starch and lignin. In Europe, more than 6 million tons (!!) of 250,000 different adhesives are used each year in various fields, including engineering and construction. The consumption of epoxy and formaldehyde-based adhesives alone increased by more than 50% within five years. More than 90% of the epoxy and phenol-formaldehyde resins are currently made from fossil resources. Likewise, many other adhesives, e.g. for the use on latex-based and acrylic-based floors are produced from fossil raw materials. In addition, many of these adhesives are highly flammable and / or toxic or release toxic compounds. Due to these facts and the shortage of fossile resources, the adhesive manufacturers as well as the partner companies in this project want to force the use of sustainable raw materials for adhesives and binders.
