Strategies for the implementation of plans to meet public space requirements

The architecture department of the City of Vienna has - in its development concepts - defined instruments to achieve a better supply of public space in urban development and regeneration areas. These instruments are called "Bedarfsplan" (plan to meet public space requirements). The study will elaborate implementation strategies for this planning tool. The strategies will include research on other cities' strategies, parameters and tools to guarantee a sufficient public space supply as well as a wide enough range of different types of spaces.Criteria will be described for the assessment of the surrounding as well as the needs generated by the planned development on the area itself. These criteria will inlcude a typology, social and structural aspects as well as aspects of public space qualities. The study is carried out in collaboration with a team of social scientists.
