Wilderness Character Mapping im National Park Hohe Tauern Salzburg
Abstract
Wilderness Character Mapping (WCM) is a methodological framework developed in the USA to describe the wilderness character of protected areas, especially national parks, in a spatially explicit manner. The quality of the wilderness character of an area is derived in this guideline, which was developed by Tricker & Landres (2017), on the basis of the characteristics "close to nature", "wilderness", "unexplored", "quality of nature experience" and "other values and characteristics". In this work, a WCM study is to be carried out for the Hohe Tauern National Park Salzburg, which describes and maps the wilderness character of the area. For this purpose, the methodology developed for the situation of the US National Parks must be adapted to the special circumstances of the Hohe Tauern National Park and the conditions of the federal state of Salzburg. This project will be carried out in cooperation and agreement with the National Park Authority. The expected results can be used to derive the threat to existing wilderness qualities on the one hand and to identify areas with development potential on the other. An advantage of the WCM framework is that it provides a reproducible basis for long-term monitoring. Based on this, recommendations for the improved implementation of process protection can be developed, which will contribute to the long-term protection and development of the wilderness character of the Hohe Tauern National Park Salzburg.
