Analysis of historical sources of the garden in Wilbrandtgasse 37
Abstract
The house of Dr. Anna Rezek née Bunzl and Dr. Philipp Rezek is a design by the architect Hans Glas, born in Vienna in 1892, in the style of the Neue Sachlichkeit from 1932. The building was listed as a historical monument by decision of 14.9.2010 BG015 TZ 5719/2010. The accompanying garden was designed by the Viennese garden architect Albert Esch (1883-1954). The collection of Albert Esch at the Archive of Austrian Landscape Architecture of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, LArchiv, contains three historical plans of the garden (main plan, technical plan, planting plan). Esch's terraced garden is still preserved in its basic structure and thus forms an iconographic testimony to the residential garden style of the 1920s and 1930s. The project includes research and analysis of historical source, based on the plan inventory of the LArchive as well as research and analysis of comparative projects in order to draw analogous conclusions about the planting of the garden. The study will provide central findings for the planned restoration of the garden in accordance with the preservation order. Plans for the redevelopment of the garden are not part of this project, but have to be worked out by a landscape architecture firm. The project to restore and further develop the historical garden Wilbrandtgasse 37 according to garden conservation aspects is unique for Austria and therefore of particular scientific interest. Research results are to be published and presented at scientific conferences.
