Abstract
Austria has been very successful in implementing the Energy Strategy, but in the field of resource efficiency and climate protection Austria is still far from reaching the (inter)national targets. International reports and political programmes increasingly emphasise the potential contribution of resource efficiency to climate protection and to the achievement of the Paris Climate Change Convention (2015). Nevertheless, there have been few studies to date that examine the relationship between resource efficiency and climate protection, and in particular the contribution of economic activities to saving greenhouse gas emissions. In the REDEC project, synergy potentials between resource efficiency (measured in material flows) and climate protection (measured in CO2 emissions) were investigated for Austria from a macroeconomic perspective. Three hotspots among the economic activities were identified: construction activities, food production, and the health sector. In the project REDEC#2, Austrian construction activities are now investigated in more detail. Furthermore, first steps in the integration of MFA data in the MonMech model are planned and implemented. This analysis should contribute to a more differentiated view of the necessary material restructuring of our society in order to be able to derive concrete recommendations.
