CO2 Monitoring Helioz
Abstract
The aim of the project is to carry out research activities and to provide scientific advice supporting Helioz and its local partners (CDD/Voices of South) in order to ensure CO2 savings in their water disinfection project in Bangladesh. Helioz provided about 4000 WADIs for households in Bangladesh as a clean and simple method for water disinfection. With the help of these solar-powered UV measuring devices, the process of solar water disinfection (SODIS) can be visualised in PET bottles. The use of WADIs replaces the boiling of drinking water with firewood from non-renewable sources and thus leads to a reduction of CO2 emissions. Carbon saving of about 4000 t CO2 per year was anticipated. The BOKU Center for Global Change accompanies and monitors the goals of the CO2 reduction project. BOKU checks and adjusts the calculation of the emission reductions, determines the emission reduction potential per WADI and develops the monitoring system for Helioz. In addition, BOKU supports Helioz in the preparation of training materials, especially with regard to CO2 savings, to enable Helioz staff to implement the BOKU climate protection standard in the project. Helioz is responsible for the target-oriented selection of households and for the proper distribution of WADIs in the project region of Bagerhat in Bangladesh. The data for the monitoring will be collected by local project partners on site at intervals of two to four months. They serve as a basis for reporting, which is carried out by BOKU in Austria. Based on the continuous monitoring data, BOKU prepares two monitoring reports with the aim to assess the actual CO2 emission reduction of the project. For this purpose an on-site evaluation is also carried out
