Abstract
The Institute of Waste Management (ABF-BOKU) is concerned with the investigation of greenhouse gas relevant processes on (old) reactor landfills and develops strategies and technologies for the reduction of landfill gas emissions, such as methane oxidation systems. For example, the vertical gas wells at a former municipal solid waste landfill site are to be replaced by methane oxidation windows (bio-windows) and their functional efficiency with regard to methane gas reduction is to be investigated and monitored over a period of 3 years. The technology of methane oxidising bio-windows in this field of application is not yet state of the art in Austria and both the technical design and performance of the processes are scientifically monitored.
