Satellite-based modelling of grassland yield and quality dynamics (SatGrass)
Abstract
SatGrass aims to continuously estimate yield and quality of Austrian grasslands, being the most important land-use system in terms of area and ecological importance. The Earth Observation (EO) program Copernicus provides imagery in high spatio-temporal resolution, which support applications at field and regional level. Time series from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 are jointly analysed and evaluated to identify cutting times and subsequently the utilisation intensity of grassland. From EO data derived vegetation traits and weather data, yield and forage quality dynamics will be modelled throughout the entire growing season. Thus, knowledge of field-specific yield and grass quality at any time will for the first time be made available to farmers, enabling them to determine the optimal cutting time. At the regional level, reliable yield estimates serve agricultural policy assessments and statistical purposes, in particular Austria's Economic Accounts for Agriculture (EAA). The possibility of quantifying yield losses due to increasingly hazardous weather conditions is an important requirement for risk management and for ensuring feed supply for the livestock of affected regions.
