Support for assessments on hydromorphology for the 3rd Danube River Basin Management Plan
Abstract
The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) is an International Organisation consisting of 14 cooperating states and the European Union as contracting parties. Through the ICPDR, Member States committed themselves to the development of coordinated management plans at the level of the international river basin district by 2021, focusing on four Significant Water Management Issues (SWMIs), being pollution by (1) organic substances, (2) nutrients and/or (3) hazardous substances and (4) hydromorphological alterations. Based on the assessment of hydromorphological pressures (e.g. hydrological alterations, morphological alterations, disruption of lateral and longitudinal connectivity for fish and sediment) within the Danube catchment, measures towards the achievement of "good status" by 2027 have to be specified. In close collaboration with the ICPDR Secretariat and the ICPDR HYMO Taks Group, the current hydromorphological status will be assessed and compared to previous DRBM Plans (2009, 2015). With regard to continuity restoration, an ecological prioritisation approach for continuity restoration will be calculated in order to enable efficient planning of measures based on recent data. Furthermore, best-practice examples for hydromorphological restoration in the DRB will be collected and assessed in order to demonstrate what was already achieved and in order to support the future planning process.
