Abstract
The overall objective of the project is to provide forestry practice with a salvage timber logistics guide that includes robust logistics strategies and measures for coping with increased timber volumes due to calamities. The logistics strategies to be developed include unimodal (pure truck transport) and multimodal transport chains, i.e. rail transport of timber. Furthermore, storage areas available at terminals will be included in the logistics planning in the form of timber storage concepts. In order to record the current challenges as well as experiences in coping with a forest disaster situation, structured interviews with the main actors in the logistics chain, i.e. foresters, logistics managers, freight forwarders as well as representatives of RailCargo Austria and other actors will be conducted and analysed on the basis of process models. The virtual testing of different, specific timber storage concepts as well as the development of logistics strategies is carried out by using simulation models adapted and configured for a case study region, which allows the mapping of logistics management to cope with increased timber volumes. The simulation tests predefined configurations of uni- and multimodal transport chains, different storage concepts as well as coping strategies in risk scenarios over time. In order to be able to derive robust strategies suitable for practical use and to ensure that strategies are accepted and subsequently implemented by forestry practice, it is necessary to deal with the topic scientifically and, above all, to involve the practical side intensively and from an early stage on. For this reason, interviews and workshops will be held with the participants of the wood logistics chain. Strategies for emergency plans for the case study region Waldviertel to cope with the accumulation of damaged timber and other risks will be derived and evaluated participatorily.
