Bat species of the Seewinkel region and their habitat use
Abstract
The Seewinkel region offers unique habitat structures in Central Europe. For example, the largest continuous reed belt in Central Europe is located here. However, only fragmentary information on the bat fauna in the region is available. This is alarming, since available data (own data, Spitzenberger and Bauer 2001) indicate a bat community unique in Austria. There is evidence of the endangered small mouse-eared Myotis oxygnathus and one of the few summer quarters of the rough-skinned bat Pipistrellus nathusii in Austria (own data, Spitzenberger and Bauer 2001). Therefore, the aim of this project is to complete the knowledge of the bat fauna in the Seewinkel region by using a combination of acoustic and classical investigation methods. In particular, we aim to - create a complete species inventory of the bat fauna in the Seewinkel region. - determine the use of special habitat structures (e.g. salt lakes, reed belts etc.) by bat species.
