Designing the Danube Island: Interviews with Participating Landscape Architects
Abstract
In 2019, the planning director of the City of Vienna, DI Thomas Madreiter, stated that the Danube Island was "next to the subway extension, the most ingenious urban planning and planning measure of Vienna in the second half of the 20th century." The island has long since become an integral part of Vienna's landscape and everyday urban life. The present project seizes the last chance to interview the already aged planners and landscape architects, who helped to determine the current appearance in the 1970s and 1980s, as contemporary witnesses and thus to collect important material for the comprehensive reappraisal of this century-old construction. The research project is based on the qualitative analysis of text data generated by guided interviews with experts. The goal of the project is to 1) analyze the complex design process and 2) understand significant design decisions, thereby 3) contributing to Vienna's urban and environmental history (including a short film on the Wien Geschichte wiki page) and 4) creating an important contemporary document that will be available for future research and development questions. The results of the research project will find their way into a planned exhibition about the Danube Island (Wien Museum, planned for 2023) and - after completion of the research project - will be published in a scientific journal.
