Abstract
The hospital complexes Wien-Steinhof/Otto-Wagner-Areal (Vienna) and Mauer-Öhling (Lower Austria) represent important examples of hygienic urban design around 1900. These progressive healthcare landscapes were a synthesis of modern architecture and landscape architecture designed to promote physical and psychological recovery. More than 100 years after their construction, these facilities have been subjected to fundamental changes, whether through changing uses or necessary modernization. At the Institute of Landscape Architecture, we already dealt with this topic in a course in the summer semester of 2020. The present project is a source research on the open spaces of the two hospitals Wien-Steinhof/Otto-Wagner-Areal and Mauer-Öhling. This comprises research, analysis and documentation of historical and current sources on the landscape architectural design of the two hospital complexes. This research project will contribute to strengthing the core competencies of the Institute of Landscape Architecture in the field of "History of the Designed Landscape".
