Review Environmental Impact Newspaper printed vs electronic edition
Abstract
Newspapers, magazines, catalogues and brochures usually end up in the waste paper or residual waste after a short period of use. They account for a significant share of the waste generated in Vienna. This is accompanied by corresponding climate impacts due to the production and disposal of newspapers. Reading newspapers, magazines, catalogues and brochures online on a tablet, e-reader, mobile phone or PC can potentially reduce the demand for printed media and thus also the amount of waste. However, it is unclear whether this reduction in paper waste can also contribute to climate protection. The production, distribution, use and disposal/recycling of digital and printed media causes greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. The aim of the project is to illustrate environmental impacts and to identify parameters that influence them in particular, so that it can be estimated under which circumstances which solution is advantageous.
