Green Space Provision for a Environmentally Just City - Visonary Realities
Abstract
The study considers the contribution of green space provision to the realization of an environmentally sound city. In this context, both the real land use and density ratios of selected urban districts and the possibilities of residents to access and use green and recreational space close to their homes as well as further away are taken into account. The project builds on the method of design-based research (see Prominski and Seggern 2009). In it, a possible/visionary state serves to transcend real constraints to arrive at possible solutions, examine their feasibility, and derive courses of action. Based on ideal images, which are initially designed independently of existing regulations and property law restrictions, ways to get there are conceived and the (possible improvement of) framework conditions are shown. Connections between different aspects of urban quality of life will be worked out in order to serve as an argument and basis for further decisions that will be made for Vienna as an environmentally sound city.
