Hydropower For You

The "Hydropower for You" (Acronym: Hydro4U) project addresses the sustainable development and use of the Central Asian (CA; Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) small hydropower potential (SHP) with innovative European hydropower solutions, taking into account future climate change, transboundary challenges and the water-energy-food-climate nexus. Hydro4U will specifically contribute to the UN SDGs, namely "clean, affordable and secure energy, climate action, zero hunger, economic growth, sustainable production and consumption, modernizing industry and infrastructure", leading to "clean water and sanitation", peace and partnerships. It supports Central Asia to build a low-carbon, climate-resilient future and is consistent with EU strategic objectives expressed in the Water Framework Directive, Renewable Energy Directive, thereby promoting a) transboundary water and energy management in the region, b) CA-EU relationship, c) global leadership of European hydropower industry, and d) reduction of disparities between countries and continents. Under the aspect of increasing water stress and energy demand, Hydro4U will undertake demonstration activities (DA) and planning activities (PA) to elaborate, implement and disseminate environmentally, economically and socio-politically sustainable solutions with a dual focus on: 1) low pressure run-of-river power plant (small hydropower) using an innovative shaft hydropower plant with a 400 kW capacity at Badam (Kazakhstan) and 2) medium pressure small hydropower plant using Francis container power plant solution with 2MW capacity at Shakhimardan (Uzbekistan).
