Digital planning of cable yarding operations
Abstract
Since Pestal (1961), there have been no significant innovations in the process of cable line planning and deflection calculations. The project proposal aims to establish digital cable road planning in both training and forestry practice. The training materials to be produced will serve to supplement existing literature for planning timber harvesting in cable yarding terrain and will be made available to a broad user group, respectively. The field measurements will be used for the scientific development of algorithms and will be made available to interested machine and rope manufacturers. In addition to the introduction of digital planning, a concept for monitoring during operation will be developed. The objectives can be summarized as follows: (1) Reduction of the time required for planning by 80% through digital planning and route finding in cable yarding operations. (2) Guidelines for digital cable way planning and deflection calculation (3) Field tests and parameter evaluation for deflection calculations and algorithm development with a focus on dynamic measurements (4) Concept development of a sensor system to monitor critical system components (supports, end mast, anchor beams) during operation (5) Development of a database of reference data sets for scientific and practical purposes
