Abstract
Sediment transport in rivers is a complex hydraulic-sedimentological process where the physical interaction between hydraulics and sediment is still not fully understood. For this reason, the results of hydronumerical simulations, e.g. the simulation of bedforms, armouring layer formations, segregation processes, local scouring, erosion, sedimentation and fractional sediment transport are only possible with strong limitations. In addition, the results of the calculations are influenced by natural uncertainties, such as hydrological input data, the grain composition of the sediment, the input of bedload and its dispersion behavior, but also by the data quantity and data quality. The BAW supports the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) in its activities. Despite many years of experience with regard to the effect of regulating structures and bedload management, various gaps in knowledge remain in detail. Some of them are to be closed within the framework of cooperative research and development projects of the contracting parties. The aim of these cooperative research and development projects is therefore to improve the basic physical understanding of the hydraulic-sedimentological processes. The focus is on the augmentation of equivalent bedload material and the associated processes. The starting point for these questions is the need to optimize bedload management on the Rhine and Elbe rivers. Bedload management is planned and its effectiveness checked with the help of accompanying sediment transport models. The knowledge about bedload dynamics is still insufficient in the detail, resulting in a partly inadequate representation of bedload transport in sediment transport models and complicating the planning of bedload management in practice.
