Inequalities and Democratic Participation in the EU’s Neighbourhood
Abstract
The project examines the extent to which the European Union involves non-governmental organisations, trade unions, business and consumer associations in the design and implementation of its policies to address inequalities in its neighbourhood. On the one hand, the project will conduct an organisational survey with non-governmental organisations in countries in the EU's southern and eastern neighbourhood. On the other hand, based on qualitative research in Ukraine, Georgia, Tunisia, Morocco, two dimensions addressing inequalities and discrimination in three policy fields will be investigated (migration, environment, food security). In the governance dimension, we analyse the impact of non-state actors' participation on the democratic legitimacy of EU-related policies. In the policy dimension, we examine the substantive impact on addressing economic, social, cultural and territorial inequalities.
