Assessment of household plastic waste handling in the city of Windhoek
Abstract
The disposal of plastic waste is among the emerging environmental issues in Namibia which has a devastating effect on the environment. Recently, in Namibia, there are many cases of wild animals getting entangled in plastics, some getting stuck in plastic containers and others ingesting plastic waste. Most of plastic waste is dumped into landfills and littered to the environment. Specific regulations, guidelines or policies for plastic waste are missing. The challenge posed by the lack of studies and accurate information on the state of plastic waste makes it even difficult to support the formulation of effective national policies for plastic waste management. The aim of the WasteWIN project is to analyse the handling of plastic waste at households in the city of Windhoek, Namibia. Specifically, the project measures the generation of household plastic packaging waste. Besides quantity generated, the composition of the waste stream is analysed by function, material and other properties. The disposal behavior of the households is evaluated based on questionnaires with a sample of householders. Expert interviews with stakeholders complete the data collection. The results of this analysis are presented and discussed at a seminar with stakeholders, sharing results and methodology and exploring potential solution for a better plastic waste management.
