Monitoring of soil health indicators in south-eastern Lower Austrian landscapes
Abstract
The Lower Austrian soil protection law requires monitoring to assess long-term changes of the soil status. In this project we re-visit 300 of the Lower Austrian soil monitoring sites in the region south-east of Vienna to collect topsoils (0-20 cm) beneath grassland and croplands. These samples will be analysed for soil health indicators along with soils from the same sites that were archived from the initial samping campaign in 1990-1992. The selected soil health indicators include organic carbon, soil acidity (pH) as well as potentially toxic metals and metalloids. Tha dataset will be used to document the current soil health status and for exploring temporal changes during the past three decades. The information obtained will serve as evidence for soil and climate change policy in Lower Austria and the implementation of the recently released EU Mission "A Soil Deal for Europe".
