Soil health: Lower Austria as best practice region in the context of Europan soil policy
Abstract
Improving soil health is among the main challenges for achieving the sustainability goals. The European Commission is currently conducting intense consultations with the member states to establish a European Soil Health Law. In Austria, soil protection legislation is a mater of the individual provinces; in Lower Austria it is regulated through the Lower Austrian Soi Protection Act. In this project we will develop scientific evidence for the consultation process, largely based on our current soil monitoring activities in Lower Austria. The proposals of the European Commission will be checked against the established Lower Austrian methodologies for soils monitoring and measures to improve soil health. In particular, the proposed indicators and thresholds for the main soil threats as defined in the European Thematic Soil Strategy will be tested using the Lower Austrian soil monitoring database. Finally, we will propose appropriate spatial units (soil districts), indicators and methods, and related thresholds for soil health assessment for further discussion in the European consultation process.
