WIMBY - Wind In My Backyard: Using holistic modelling tools to advance social awareness and engagement on large wind power installations in the EU. TP Visualisation and social acceptance
Abstract
Wind power is one of the fastest growing, most mature and cost-effective renewable energy technologies, but faces significant challenges to its further expansion. Factors such as restrictive regulations, concerns about changes to the landscape, negative impacts on biodiversity or health slow down the expansion of new wind power plants in line with the targets set at EU level. In order to contribute to the EU decarbonisation strategy, WIMBY aims to translate development potentials, negative impacts, conflict areas as well as synergy effects for different stakeholders. The project brings together high-resolution, spatially explicit techno-economic models with environmental and health impact assessment models. With the help of realistic virtual reality methods, aspects of landscape and social acceptance are explored in local case study workshops.
