Research programme to investigate the dynamics of the Danube riverbed in the Jochenstein reservoir - Introductory study
Abstract
Knowledge of the characteristics of the Danube bed in terms of composition and dynamics (rearrangement processes) in the Jochenstein reservoir area, i.e. in the Achleiten to Jochenstein area - approximately river km 2223.0 to river km 2203.3 - is of great practical importance for viadonau, both in terms of ongoing maintenance (waterway management) and bedload management, as well as for ecological projects and the effects on water level elevations during flood events. As a border section with Germany, this area also holds a special position. The nature of the bed material (gravel or fine sediment) and the associated processes (including bedload transport, dune formation, armouring layer formation, sedimentation and bed erosion) are also of great interest from a scientific perspective. Intensified research in this area should provide both cooperation partners with a gain in knowledge and improve competitiveness.
