Sediment monitoring and management on the Upper Salzach River II
Abstract
Knowledge of bedload transport in downstream reaches of torrents and their receiving waters is of crucial importance for process understanding, planning and execution of embankment measures, as well as analysis and evaluation of flood events with bedload transport. Past flood events have clearly demonstrated the need for direct measurements of bedload transport. The data and knowledge gained through comprehensive monitoring are intended to improve the current calculation methods and subsequently serve to optimize bedload-managing embankment measures. In order to gain a holistic insight into bedload transport, this project will also be extended beyond the competence boundary of the torrent and thus enable uninterrupted data acquisition of bedload transport. Based on the findings of existing sediment monitoring projects on torrents (Urslau, Johnsbach, Suggadinbach and Strobler-Weißenbach) and rivers (Danube, Drau, Isel, and Rofenache), a monitoring system will be designed in the course of this project to determine event and annual loads, onset of movement, transport capacity, grain sizes and transport widths, as well as bedload dosage of existing protective structures, interaction with receiving waters and the effect of river engineering measures.
