Analysis of the waste prevention potential of Too Good To Go
Abstract
Worldwide, 8% of greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to food waste generated (FAO, 2017). In Austria alone, the food retail sector is responsible for over 80,000 tons of food waste per year. The app Too Good To Go (TGTG), founded in Denmark in 2015, has therefore set itself the task of counteracting food waste in the catering and retail sectors. The concept of the app is to give partner businesses the opportunity to sell products that have not been sold by the end of the day and are still edible in the form of a surprise package at a cheaper price to app users. Since 2019, Too Good To Go is also available in Austria (TGTG, 2019). The proposed work deals with the impact of Too Good To Go and other economic enterprises on food waste prevention in Austria. The aim is to find out what influence Too Good To Go has on food waste prevention in Austria and to what extent the products in the surprise packages are actually usable or used and what proportion is subsequently disposed of by consumers.
