Population dynamics and growth of epiphytes.
Abstract
A population of vascular epiphytes is being studied in a humid montane forest in Eastern Mexico since 1992, using repeated photographs of branches with epiphyte cover and subsequent computer-assisted image analysis. This method allows to analyse: the vegetation structure within the canopy and possible inter- and intra-specific associations, the distribution of individual species within the canopy and possible niche separation, the population dynamics, including rates of birth, survival mortality and growth, expected life span, and the time required to reach fertility under natural conditions, the succession in canopy communities considering stochastic and deterministic elements, the perspectives for the survival of epiphytes in a landscape formed by human activities.
