Assessment and correction of the DEM data 'MONA' for hydrological applications.
Abstract
The digital elevation model (DEM) 'MONA' is checked for its feasability in runoff-modelling for the whole river network of Austria, including the surrounding areas that contribute to the Austrian rivers, i. e. the Danube river (Bavaria / Germany), the Rhine and Inn rivers (Switzerland and Germany), and the March river (parts of Czech Republic and Slovakia). The 'potential river lines' (minimum catchment area) are automatically derived along with the corresponding catchment areas and checked against the digitized river network as well as to topographic maps. Corrections needed to be introduced into the elevation data set mainly in the flat areas south of Vienna, but also all over Austria. Altogether approximately 230 corrections have been made. The result is a grid DEM with 250m grid width that is free of depressions and represents the medium catchment areas (from approx. 20km2 upwards) within the accuracy range of the 250m grid. (W.
