Estimation of topographic wetness indices and catchment relevant parameters for the Austrian river gauges.
Abstract
Topographic wetness indices are estimated for the whole area of Austria, and catchment relevant parameters are dreived for the Austrian gauges. In a previous project the digital elevation model (DEM) 'MONA' has been evaluated for its quality for runoff modelling and corrected (see 'Assessment and Correction of the DEM data 'MONA' for Hydrological Applications'). This model is based on a 250m regular rectangular and is used for the total contributing area of the river network of Austria. For the whole area topographic wetness indices are estimated according to several methods and compared. The positions of the gauges must be checked and eventually be slightly changed in order to fit best to the automatically derived flow lines (river lines). This is necessary in order to get senseful results for the gauges, which are: For each grid point the topographic wetness indices, and for each gauge the area of the corresponding catchment ('total contributing area', TCA), the mean and maximum flow length, and the variance of the flow lengths.
