Combining pedigree and marker information in the set-up of mating plans for the conservation of genetic resources.
Abstract
The rapid loss of biological diversity, including domestic animal diversity, calls for conservation and sustainable use of the existing domestic animal diversity. Both, the pedigree (through the relationship matrix) and the genetic markers yield information of varying quantity and quality about the similarity/dissimilarity of individuals. A simulation study will be conducted to study the impact of different breeding strategies (use of pedigree and/or genetic marker as source of information) on the genetic variability of populations. Practical limitations applying to livestock species like limited financial resources, the possibility to get data, quality and quantity of these data and the resulting possible intensity of management may impede the success of conservation strategies. To learn about this limitations and to be able to make suggestions for the improvement, a small Austrian cattle breed, called 'Tux-Zillertaler', was chosen to test the methods derived by simulation.
