Forest mapping from satellite images for a regional study in the Salzkammergut
Abstract
A combination of different satellite data is used for mapping land cover in the inner parts of the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria. One of the main objectives of the study is a detailed forest classification. Forest is classified into five classes according to the proportions of coniferous and deciduous trees. Furthermore the forest was classified into different age classes. The methodology build on the combined use of high resolution panchromatic satellite data (IRS-1C) with a resolution of app. 6*6 m and multispectral data (Landsat TM) with a resolution of 30*30 m. To increase the accuracy two different scenes covering two different phenological periods are selected. The spring scene reveals information on the defoliated state, whereas the summer scene reveals information on the foliated state.
