An integrated biosensor system for patient monitoring by measurement of extremely low analyte concentrations present in the blood (IST-13478-PAMELA)
Abstract
PAMELA-IST-1999-13478 is an EC funded research action (DG Information Society) for the year 2000-2003. It aims at developing a biosensor system that allows very fast blood analysis to determine the presence and amount of prostate specific antigen. This parameter is important in the follow-up of prostate cancer. Development of an extremely sensitive, relliable, and easy-to-use instrument requires expertise in divers scientific fields. This is met by an interdisciplinary composition of the consortium (biotechnology, surface analysis, microelectronics, microfluidics, and instrumentation). The opportunity of universities, research institutes, SMEs, and an industrials working together as partners, will guaranee a market and product oriented approach. Our strategy towards optimum sensitivity and reproducibility of the biosensor involves a crystalline linking layer consisting of bacterial S-layers at the biology/transducer interface which allows a highly organised and oriented probe deposition with reproducible density. The benefits of such a rational design of the biochemical layer have been discussed in the literature. However, up till now, no thorough investigation was carried out to demonstrate this in real biosensors.
