Wildlife corridors
Abstract
Motorways and other roads act as barriers for some wildlife species. Fragmentation and loss of landscapes and habitats are the consequences. Human mobility therefore restricts wildlife mobility. The possibilities of migration and genetic interchange for wildlife species are nowadays in most industrial countries confined to so called ¿wildlife corridors¿. But the importance of special regions as potential migration corridors for game species was not always appreciated enough or even not known at all. Especially in road and motorway planning processes it would be helpful to have information about the network of mobility for wildlife. Wildlife corridors could be considered in time, passageways and green-bridges for wildlife could be placed at the right locations when new infrastructures are built. On ami of this study is to examine the applicability of remote sensing methods and terrestrial surveys to identify corridor structures at different landscape scales. With the collected data and information from aerial / satellite images and terrestrial surveys a resistance model for the investigation area with the indicator species red deer and wild boar was developed. Resistance models of this kind can be used to check the future effects of planned transportation infrastructures on the permeability of landscapes for wildlife. They can also be used to visualize the consequences of regional planning strategies within a wildlife corridor area.
