Full conversion to organic farming in two Austrian Regions - develpopment of scenarios
Abstract
The project aims to (a) develop scenarios of a full regional conversion to organic farming in two regions and (b) assess its impact on agriculture, landscape, regional economy, eating habits and food quality. The project should provide following products: (a) effect of a conversion on the production methods, economics and fretilizer use of selected farm types; (b) changes in the income from agriculture in the selected farm types under various price and demand assumptions; (c) analysis of the social and economic barriers to a regional-scale conversion and possible participative approaches to overcome these barriers; (d) participative indicators to assess the scenarios of a full regional conversion and of a sustainable agriculture form the point of view of the stakeholders; (e) effects of a conversion on the environment (nature conservation, water quality, resource use), the economy (employment in the region, income development in the related sectors), the landscape (biotype, uses) and on landscape planning guidelines. The regions under study are the NUTS III Regions Liezen and Weinviertel, however issues at farm and at national level are also included. Methods used include farm analysis and modelling, participative sociology methods, methods of empirical economic and market research as well as regional and sector analysis, application of GIS on the landscape level, quantitaive criteria used in nature conservation, inter- and transdisciplinary workshops.
