Engineering of a Biopile Remediation
Abstract
PAH-contaminated soil was remediated by applying a new biopile treatment which enabled microbial degradation of PAH even for fine-grained soils. Additives like nutrients, microbial inoculum, and coarse material were employed. Operating parameters like pH, humidity, temperature, and oxygen concentration were adjusted and maintained through the process. A monitoring strategy was developed to follow the degradation process and determine remediation success. This procedure includes the measurement of contaminant concentrations as well as the decrease of toxicity. The developed treatment technique enables a sustainable remediation of soils contaminated with various organic pollutants.
