Quantitative Trait Loci Affecting Milk Production: Mapping and Utilization for Marker Assisted Selection in Dairy and Dual Purpose Cattle.
Abstract
The objective of the present proposal is to map the quantitative genetic loci (QTL) affecting kg milk, milk protein% and kg protein in dairy and dual purpose cattle, determine the effects of these loci on other economically or biologically important traits, and develop the methodological and biometrical infrastructure for effective use of these information for genetic improvement by marker assisted selection (MAS). Our group is mainly focussed on the development of a theoretical framework for incorporating marker-QTL map information in a realistic marker assisted selection program, and to evaluate the results of such a program. Further we study the use of MAS in cattle populations where the breeding goal consists of a large number of traits (including dairy, beef and fitness traits). Finally we are involved in determining the frequency of QTL alleles in the general population. The expected achievement of the project is to increase yearly production (kg protein) in dairy and dual purpose cattle, while avoiding deleterious effects on other traits of economic importance.
