Genetic differentiation of sheep breeds in the eastern part of the Alps Genetic differentiation of sheep breeds in the eastern part of the Alps
Abstract
Several autochthonous sheep breeds still exist in the eastern part of the Alps. They are more or less related with regard to their breeding history. Such breeds are: Bergschaf, Braunes Bergschaf, Tiroler Steinschaf, Alpines Steinschaf, Montafoner Steinschaf, Krainer Steinschaf and Kärntner Brillenschaf. Additionally to the breeds mentioned above some highly endangered breeds in Austria like Waldschaf and Zackelschaf are investigated. The breed differentiation based on molecular genetic information (microsatellites) is examined. It will be clarified whether it is possible to assign a single animal correctly to its breed using molecular genetic information only.
