Virtual Lysimeter
Abstract
Virtual lysimeters are devices similar to traditional lysimeters to investigate the hydrological (or substantial) water balance of a soil body. The concept of the virtual lysimeter directly takes into account that soil parameter depend on natural conditions. The idea is based on simultaneous measurement of soil water tension and soil water content in a soils body not separated from the surrounding area. Recent improvements of measuring techniques facilitate the application of this concept. To prevent disturbance of the soil body the installation of the sensors should be made from the surface without digging a trench. Soil water storage is directly assessable by changes of soil water content profiles and the direction of water movement is a function of the total potential gradient. Advantages of this concept are representation of natural conditions, low costs for establishing field sites and to provide insight into physical flow processes.
